In these posts I will be discussing a single character in Mandarin Chinese, and giving a few example sentences using it.

Today’s character or hanzi 汉字 is 成 chéng.

成 chéng = to accomplish, achieve

成!chéng! = OK!  Done!

成功 chéng gōng = to succeed / successful

成绩 chéngjì = grade

成就 chéngjiù = achievement

成人 chéngrén = adult

成长 chéngzhǎng = to grow up

成为 chéngwéi = to become

As you can see, there are lots of similar words using 成 ‘chéng’ which translate into something happening as a result of change or hard work.

Let’s look at some examples:

我成为了一名老师 wǒ chéngwéi le yì míng lǎoshī = I became a teacher

孩子们都成年了 háizimen dōu chéngnián le = The children have all grown up

你的成绩好不好? nǐde chéngjì hǎo bù hǎo? = Are your grades good?

Why don’t you write a sentence using 成 ‘chéng’ in the comment box below and I’ll check it for you?
