Korean Lesson 26: I’ve decided to…

In this lesson we are going to learn how to say that you have decided to do something.  This uses the Korean structure -giro haessøyo.

The structure is very simple to use as there are no ‘irregular’ structures.  You simply take the -ta/da ending off of the main verb.  Examples: møkda > møk ‘eat’.

Next, add -giro to the verb form.  Møk-giro.

Then add the past tense form of the verb ‘hada’.  This is of course the slightly irregular ‘haessøyo’.

Møg-kiro haessøyo – I have decided to eat.

Remember your basic sentence orders.  The thing that you have decided to eat, drink, play, etc. goes at the very beginning of the sentence.  It will usually be the object therefore it will be followed by the object marker -rûl/ûl.  Check back to an earlier lesson for a reminder on this.

Some examples:  (N.B. Subjects are often not mentioned so each example could be ‘you/he/she/we/they’ etc.)

Pab-ûl møk-giro haessøyo – I have decided to eat rice. (Or a meal)

Brian-hago syop’ing ha-giro haessøyo – I’ve decided to go shopping with Brian

Kû jamba-ga sa-giro haessøyo – I’ve decided to buy that jumper

i-shinbar-i sa-giro haessøyo – I’ve decided to buy these shoes (shinbal – shoe/s)

nae-ir-ûn ilgop shi-e ttøna-giro haessøyo – I’ve decided to leave at 7 tomorrow

(nae-il – tomorrow + topic marker -ûn)

See if you can do a few of your own with these verbs:

chada – to sleep

kada – to go

oda – to come

il hada – to work

e.g. nae-il ahop shi-e il ha-giro haessøyo – I’ve decided to work tomorrow at 9

Good luck!  Write your Korean decisions in the comment box!

Annyøng kaseyo!
