Spanish Lesson 7 – The verb TENER ‘to have’


TENER – to have

As with the last unit, here is the verb in the same forms.

  • Tengo – I have
  • Tienes – You have
  • Tiene – He/she/it has
  • Tenemos – We have
  • Tenéis – You have (plural)
  • Tienen – They have

TENER is used as the verb ‘to be’ in certain expressions such as:

  • tener … años – to be … years old
  • tener sed – to be thirsty
  • tener hambre – to be hungry
  • tener sueño – to be sleepy
  • tener miedo – to be scared
  • tener frío – to be cold
  • tener calor – to be hot
  • tener vergüenza – to be ashamed

e.g.

  • Tengo miedo – I’m scared
  • Tienes sueño – you are sleepy
  • Tiene hambre – he is hungry
  • Tiene sed – she is thirsty
  • Tenemos calor – we are hot
  • Tenéis frío – You are cold
  • Tienen vergüenza – they are ashamed

Translate the following: (Answers in the next lesson)

  1. They are 15 years old
  2. I am cold
  3. You (plural) are hot
  4. He is ashamed
  5. She is scared
  6. We are hungry
  7. They are sleepy
